How It Works for Survivors

Your Journey on Not Just One

Not Just One provides a step-by-step process designed to help you share your experience safely, securely, and on your own terms.

This guide will walk you through each stage of the platform experience.

1. Before You Begin

Preparation Recommendations

Before creating your profile, we recommend:

  • Finding a private, quiet space where you feel safe
  • Setting aside 30-60 minutes (though you can save and return anytime)
  • Having support resources available if needed
  • Considering whether you have a secure device and internet connection
  • Reflecting on your goals for sharing your story

Support Resources

We’ve developed resources to help you prepare:

  • Read our Self-Assessment Guide (coming soon) to help determine your readiness
  • Review the Security Checklist (coming soon) for device and connection security
  • Get familiar with our Self-Care Strategy (coming soon) for emotional well-being during sharing

Remember, there’s no rush. You can explore these resources and take all the time you need before proceeding.

2. Account Sign-Up - Always FREE

Secure Sign-Up

  1. Enter a valid email address (consider creating one specifically for this purpose)
  2. Create a strong password (we provide guidance on secure options)
  3. Verify your email through our secure verification process

Your privacy starts at sign-up. No personally identifying information is required.

3. Profile Creation

Pseudonym (Fake Name) Selection

If you wish to hide your identity, choose a pseudonym that:

  • Feels comfortable for you to use
  • Doesn’t contain identifying information
  • Isn’t connected to your online presence elsewhere
  • Allows you to maintain separation between your real identity and platform identity

Basic Information Framework

You’ll be guided through sharing:

  • Time period of the incident(s)
  • General geographic region (as specific or general as you prefer)
  • Type of crime or experience
  • Current status of case (if applicable)
  • Your primary reasons for sharing

All of the information you enter is restricted to Professional users. Other Survivors and the public cannot see your story.

Storytelling Framework

Our structured questionnaire helps you:

  • Share your experience in a clear, organized format
  • Include details that might help identify patterns
  • Avoid potentially identifying or legally problematic information
  • Focus on elements most relevant to potential outcomes
  • Maintain control over the level of detail you provide
  • Reserve identifying or detailed information for one-to-one engagement with Professionals you approve

After creating your profile, you can return later to edit or expand upon your details.

Setting Professional Contact Preferences

You can specify what type of Professionals you seek to interact with:

  • Select which Professional categories you seek to contact you (e.g., journalists, researchers, law enforcement)
  • Select your primary goals for being on the platform
  • Update these settings at any time

4. Approval Process

Profile Review Process

After you complete your profile, we’ll review everything you’ve shared and communicate with you if we have any suggestions or safety concerns.

Ongoing Management

After your profile is published, you maintain complete control:

  • Edit or update any information at any time
  • Monitor who has requested connection
  • Communicate with Not Just One support if you experience any issues with the platform or other users

5. Connection Process

How Professionals Find Your Profile

Verified professionals can:

  • Search for profiles using general parameters (not personal details)
  • Filter by relevant factors for their work
  • Request connection if they believe they can help

Connection Requests

When a professional is interested in connecting:

  • You receive a secure notification through your preferred channel(s) (such as email, phone/text, Not Just One messaging or your favorite social media platform)
  • You can view their verified credentials and reason for interest
  • You have the option to accept, ignore, or decline with no obligation

Communication Boundaries

Once you approve a connection:

  • You set the pace and frequency of communication
  • You can pause or end conversations at any time
  • You decide if, when and how you share any personal off-platform contact information
  • You notify support anytime a Professional user oversteps your communication boundaries

6. Ongoing Support

Throughout your journey, you have access to:

  • Step-by-step guidance for each process
  • Self-care resources and grounding techniques

7. Potential Outcomes

Range of Possible Results

Sharing your story may lead to various outcomes:

  • Connection with journalists who investigate and/or report on your case
  • Researchers identifying patterns across similar cases
  • Law enforcement finding new leads
  • Legislators writing and enacting policies for a safer future
  • Policy advocates using aggregate insights for reform
  • Documentarians, podcasters and other storyellers amplifying your voice
  • Professors, instructors and other teachers using your experience to train the next generation of first responders and advocates
  • Personal sense of empowerment through sharing – on-platform or off-platform, such as through speaking engagements or via connections made

Timeline Expectations

Different outcomes have different timelines:

  • Professional connections can occur at any time
  • Investigation or research processes may take months
  • System-level changes often develop over years
  • Personal benefits may be immediate or evolve over time
  • You have access to Professional user posts recruiting interested Survivors (such as for research participation, specific articles, etc.)

We encourage realistic expectations while recognizing the significant value your story brings to the platform. Even if you prefer to post your profile and remain dormant, your voice can still contribute to change for the future.
