FAQs for Survivors

Your Questions Answered

We understand that sharing your experience as a crime victim is a significant decision that comes with many questions. We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions about our platform to help you decide if Not Just One is right for you.

Getting Started

Who is Not Just One for?

Not Just One is designed for victims of serious crimes who want to share their experiences in a secure environment with qualified professionals. Our platform serves people who have experienced crimes such as sexual assault, domestic violence, attempted murder, human trafficking, stalking, hate crimes, institutional abuse, and other serious offenses.

Our platform is designed for serious crimes including but not limited to:

  • Sexual assault and rape
  • Domestic violence
  • Attempted murder
  • Child abuse
  • Human trafficking
  • Stalking
  • Hate crimes
  • Organized crime-related offenses
  • Institutional abuse (religious, educational, etc.)
  • Police/authority misconduct
  • Significant fraud or financial crimes with personal impact

The platform is most valuable for survivors whose cases have gone unreported, uninvestigated, unprosecuted, untold or where the outcome felt inadequate. It can also provide healing for any survivor desiring to use their voice for the common good.

Sharing your story is deeply personal, and readiness varies for each person. You might be ready if:

  • You can discuss your experience without feeling overwhelmed
  • You’re in a stable place with support systems
  • You have a specific purpose for sharing (seeking justice, connecting with similar cases, etc.)
  • You understand the potential outcomes and limitations
  • You feel empowered rather than obligated to share

If you’re unsure, we offer a self-assessment tool to help you determine your readiness.

Only verified professional users who have passed our rigorous verification process can access victim profiles. These include investigative journalists, researchers, law enforcement professionals, policy advocates, and others working in fields related to criminal justice.

Every professional user undergoes a multi-step verification process that includes professional credential verification, employment confirmation, reference checks, and background screening when appropriate.

That’s completely okay. Your well-being comes first. Our resources section offers information that may be helpful even if you’re not ready to create a profile. You can bookmark our site and return when and if the time feels right. We also provide connections to support services that might help in your healing journey.

Yes. Depending on your goals, alternatives might include:

  • Traditional reporting to law enforcement
  • Confidential support groups
  • Therapy and counseling services
  • Anonymous tip lines for specific agencies
  • Victim advocacy organizations focused on direct services

Privacy & Security

How is my information protected?

We employ multiple layers of security:

  • End-to-end encryption for all communications
  • Secure, password-protected profiles
  • Pseudonymous identification
  • Strict professional verification processes
  • Regular security audits by third-party experts
  • Advanced data protection protocols
  • User control over profile visibility

We design our platform to minimize this risk through:

  • Never requiring your legal name
  • Not collecting unnecessary identifying information
  • Allowing you to control how specific location details are
  • Providing guidance on what details to include/exclude
  • Never requiring contact information beyond a secure email

However, we advise users to be mindful that unique details of your case might be recognizable to those familiar with it.

Not Just One is pseudonymous rather than fully anonymous. You’ll create a profile using a pseudonym (fake name) of your choice rather than your real name. This allows professionals to connect with you while protecting your identity.

Not Just One provides guidance throughout the profile creation process to help you share your experience while minimizing legal risks. The platform is structured to help you avoid potentially defamatory statements while still sharing your truth.

Profile Creation

What information do I need to provide?

Required information is minimal:

  • A secure email address (can be created specifically for this purpose)
  • A pseudonym of your choice
  • Basic information about the type of crime/experience
  • The general time period when it occurred
  • Geographic region (as general or specific as you choose)

Additional information is optional and entirely your choice.

Choose a pseudonym that:

  • Feels comfortable to you
  • Isn’t your actual name or easily identifiable nickname
  • Doesn’t include personal identifiers (birthdate, initials, etc.)
  • Provides you with a sense of agency

We provide guidelines during the registration process.

Our structured questionnaire will guide you through sharing:

  • Key aspects of your experience
  • System responses you encountered
  • Potential patterns or connections you see
  • What kinds of outcomes you’re hoping for

We provide guidance about level of detail that’s helpful without being unnecessarily graphic or legally risky.

Yes, you can upload limited supporting materials such as:

  • Redacted official documents
  • Timeline documentation
  • Correspondence with authorities
  • Public records

These are optional and can be removed by you at any time.

Profile creation typically takes 30-60 minutes, but you can:

  • Save your progress and return later
  • Complete it in multiple sessions
  • Take your time with each section
  • Skip questions that feel uncomfortable

There’s no time limit, and we encourage you to proceed at your own pace.

Professional Connections

How do professionals find my profile?

Professionals can discover your profile through:

  • Searching by crime type or location
  • Looking for specific patterns they’re researching
  • Browsing recently added profiles
  • Following specific topic areas

Your privacy settings determine which professionals can view your profile.

Every professional user undergoes a multi-step verification process that includes:

  • Professional credential verification
  • Employment confirmation
  • Reference checks
  • Background screening when appropriate
  • Acceptance of a strict code of conduct

You can view a professional’s verified credentials before accepting any connection.

When a professional expresses interest:

  1. You receive a secure notification
  2. You can view their verified credentials and reason for interest
  3. You have the option to accept or decline with no obligation
  4. If accepted, secure messaging begins within the platform
  5. You maintain control over the communication at all times

Absolutely. You’re never obligated to accept any connection request. You can:

  • Decline without providing a reason
  • Request more information before deciding
  • Accept some and decline others
  • Revoke access at any time

Your control over connections is a core principle of our platform.

All communication happens through our secure messaging system:

  • End-to-end encrypted messages
  • No requirement to share personal contact information
  • Options for scheduled secure video calls through the platform
  • Clear boundaries and expectations for professionals
  • Ability to end communications at any time

Potential Outcomes

What kinds of outcomes can I realistically expect?

Outcomes vary widely depending on the nature of your experience, the details you share, and the professionals who connect with you. Possible outcomes include:

  • A journalist investigating your case more deeply
  • A researcher identifying your case as part of a pattern
  • Law enforcement finding new connections to other cases
  • Advocates using aggregated experiences to push for policy change

We’re careful not to promise specific results, as each situation is unique.

Timeframes vary significantly:

  • Some connections happen within days or weeks
  • In-depth investigations may take months
  • Research projects often span 6-12 months
  • Policy change initiatives can take years

We encourage realistic expectations and focus on the value of sharing regardless of the timeframe.

Even without immediate tangible outcomes, many victims find value in:

  • Having their experience documented in a purposeful way
  • Contributing to a database that may reveal patterns over time
  • Reclaiming their narrative on their own terms
  • The potential to help others through future connections

Additionally, your story might connect with others months or years later as new professionals join the platform.

While protecting individual privacy, we do provide:

  • General information about patterns identified across similar cases
  • Anonymized updates about research using aggregated data
  • Information about policy initiatives informed by platform stories
  • Optional opportunities to connect with other victims (with mutual consent)

Account Management

Can I change or remove my story later?

Yes, absolutely. You maintain complete control over your profile and can:

  • Edit any part of your story at any time
  • Update your privacy settings whenever you wish
  • Remove specific sections or content
  • Completely delete your profile and all associated data

You can delete your account at any time through a simple process:

  1. Navigate to account settings
  2. Select “Delete Account”
  3. Confirm your decision

You can easily manage communication preferences through your account settings:

  • Update your secure email if needed

Yes, you can temporarily hide your profile without deleting it:

  1. Go to profile settings
  2. Select “Deactivate Profile”
  3. Choose a timeframe or indefinite period
  4. Reactivate whenever you’re ready

During deactivation, your profile won’t be visible or searchable by professionals.

You retain ownership of your content. By sharing on our platform, you grant us limited permission to make your content available to verified professionals according to your privacy settings. We do not claim ownership of your story or have the right to use it outside the platform without your explicit permission.
